The Basic Search For Officers, Warrant officers, Ratings and Marines - The Great War 1914 – 1918
The Service
I will search the National Archive for the documents listed below, photocopy them and despatch them to you in a stout manila envelope by first class post. We aim to complete all commissions within 30 days.
Admiralty Medal Rolls (ALL)
Outlining any awards and campaign medals issued.
War Diaries (RND) & (RMLI) Only
Officers were frequently mentioned in unit War Diaries. Giving dates of postings in and out of the unit, UK leave, any hospitalisation, wounded or killed and on what duties employed. They may also give details of any gallantry awards won.
Individual Ratings and Marines were not normally named in unit War Diaries but if a unit only had, one or two casualties in a day or a man won a gallantry award for example, they could well be named and details of the event given.
NOTE: War Diaries are only searched on dates of major events, if known ie. Date killed or wounded and on the date that a gallantry award was won.
Officers Service Records (ALL)
These give full details of service and can include, date of birth, wife’s name and date of marriage, fathers profession, date of commission and promotions, details of courses and examinations taken, dates of appointment to and from each named ship, dates of retirement and death.
Ratings Service Records (RN) (RNR) (RNVR) & (RND)
The record on each man should include, date of birth, name and dates of each ship or shore establishment served in and appointments.
Royal Marine (Other Ranks) Service Records (RMLI)
The information to be found in these documents can include, birthplace, previous employment, physical description and often a record of service.
